The plan for No. 5
This par 4 has a distinct gap between the main fairway landing area and the green approach. The better route is to finish the drive in fairway, then treat the second shot as a separate carry decision. Extra drive distance is not automatically useful if it leaves awkward ground.
Off the tee
Look at where the fairway ends relative to your normal total distance. A target in its center gives a clearer second shot than trying to squeeze past the edges near the upper end. Adjust the club if firm conditions would carry the ball through that landing area.
Approach & recovery
The green lies beyond the break in closely mown ground, with a prominent bunker near the approach. Check the distance across the gap and to the putting surface. From an uncertain lie, favor solid contact and a broad target over a demanding flag-side line.
On the green
The putting surface is relatively narrow across the line of play in the reviewed aerial. Leave room on either side of the approach target, particularly when coming from an angle. Confirm the current contour and flag section on arrival before judging the first putt.
Watch for
- The interrupted fairway and approach bunker make an uncontrolled run-out or a weak second shot costly.
