About PGA West (TPC Stadium course)

Course Story

Born from Pete Dye's uncompromising vision in the desert landscape of La Quinta, the PGA West Stadium Course stands as one of America's most notorious and challenging golf experiences. This 7,300-yard behemoth carries the highest stroke rating (76.1) and slope rating (150) of all courses at the PGA West complex, earning its fearsome reputation as "the course too tough for the professionals."

The course's infamy reached its peak in 1987 when it debuted as a PGA Tour venue in the Bob Hope Classic. The layout proved so punishing that tour professionals successfully petitioned to have it removed from the rotation the following year—a ban that lasted until 2016. This rebellion speaks volumes about the course's unforgiving nature and Pete Dye's masterful ability to test every aspect of a golfer's game.

Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors

Master Gameplan

The course's character emerges through its strategic variety—wide fairway corridors that initially appear generous quickly reveal their deception through cleverly positioned hazards and demanding approach angles. Water hazards lurk throughout the layout, culminating in the course's two most famous finishing holes. The 17th, known as "Alcatraz," presents golfers with an island green that has claimed countless balls and shattered many dreams. The 18th hole continues the water theme, creating a dramatic finale where careers can be made or destroyed.

Approach Angles & Green Complex Defense

Approach Strategy

Despite its punishing reputation, the Stadium Course offers multiple tee options that allow golfers of varying abilities to experience Dye's genius without facing impossible odds. The key to success lies in course management and strategic decision-making rather than pure power, making it a thinking golfer's paradise. Those who embrace its challenges and respect its demands will find themselves engaged in one of golf's most mentally stimulating experiences, surrounded by some of the most spectacular desert scenery in the game.
