The plan for No. 18
The eighteenth is decided by the approach over the pond, whether that is your second shot or your third. Work backward from a carry you can make reliably, with room to stop beyond it.
Off the tee
Bunkers on both sides pinch the driving corridor. Find a fairway finish that keeps the next decision open; forcing extra distance is less useful if the ball ends in sand or in a lie that makes the water carry uncertain.
Approach & recovery
Measure the water carry separately from the flag and allow for a less-than-perfect strike. The recent playing footage includes exactly that club-selection dilemma. If the required carry has no comfortable margin, lay up to a clear distance short of the pond and play a controlled third.
On the green
The putting surface sits just beyond the pond between substantial side bunkers. Its contour bands create distinct areas within a broadly square outline. Favor the interior on a long approach, then assess the first putt from the ball’s actual section.
Watch for
- Bunkers on both sides of the drive
- Pond directly before the green
- Side bunkers and limited margin beyond the water
