The plan for No. 13

On the thirteenth, plan the third shot before choosing the second. This long par 5 follows the canyon on the left and ends at a heavily bunkered green, making an open approach more useful than proximity alone.

Off the tee

Stay comfortably inside the canyon edge. Bunkers on both sides shape the landing zone, with the right group extending farther toward the green. Match the drive to the available gap instead of trying to copy the tournament tee’s route.

Approach & recovery

Choose a second-shot finish that leaves a clear look and controlled carry into the green. The filmed architecture tour identifies a hollow farther up the fairway that can hide the target; assess the ground ahead before advancing into it simply to shorten the number.

On the green

Sand surrounds much of the green, whose lobes are separated by visible contour bands. Favor an interior landing area with enough room to stop. A short-sided miss after a heroic second can leave a worse chance than a full approach from a useful layup.

Watch for

  • Canyon-side left edge
  • Bunkers at the driving and approach stages
  • Low approach ground and divided green sections

Research notes

  • A fairway wedge can be preferable to a difficult short-sided recovery after a long second. (Hole 13 discussion)[1]
  • The January 2020 official card lists hole 13 as par 5, with Black 621 and Brown 539 yards. Black tees are marked permission only. These are dated printed values, current USGA totals are reconciled separately, including the unresolved 10-yard Green difference. (Page 2, hole 13)[2]
  • The narration warns that a fairway hollow can leave a blind, uphill approach. (07:15–07:27)[3]
  • The 2019 rehabilitation shifted fairways and bunkers on holes 4, 9, 10, 12 and 17, regrassed approaches, leveled tees and reshaped bunkers. Historical strategy should be checked against the revised geometry. (Scope of Work bullet list)[4]
  • The city schedules South cart-path restrictions from November 10, 2026 through February 1, 2027. These operational dates do not establish green contour acquisition or a green rebuild. (2026 table, South cart-restriction row)[5]
  • The city schedules South Course pre-seeding for October 5–26, 2026 and closure for overseeding and green maintenance October 27–November 9, 2026. Recheck the operator schedule when planning a visit. (2026 table, South Course October rows)[5]
  • The hosts describe how paired greenside bunkers often favor an approach from the central fairway. (45:12–46:04, downloaded publisher audio)[6]
  • USGA lists six men’s setups and five women’s setups. Green totals 6,625 yards; the dated card totals 6,635. Green/White totals 6,403. (CourseID 3576, all 11 rows)[7]
