The plan for No. 9

The ninth hole at Whistling Straits presents a strategic challenge where precision off the tee is paramount. Players must hug the right side of the fairway to combat the natural cant and position themselves for the best approach to a green that pitches dramatically toward Lake Michigan. This hole epitomizes the course's demanding blend of links-style strategy and breathtaking lakeside beauty.

Off the tee

Your tee shot strategy should focus on hugging the right side of the fairway to fight the natural slope and set up the best approach angle. The fairway's cant works against shots played down the left side, making it crucial to favor the right edge of the landing zone. Driver is likely needed for most players given the hole's 484-yard length, but accuracy is equally important as distance. Aim for the right-center portion of the fairway, about 250-280 yards out, to leave yourself with the most favorable approach angle.

Approach & recovery

The approach shot is where this hole shows its teeth. The green pitches hard toward the lake, creating a challenging target that demands precise club selection and trajectory control. From the right side of the fairway, you'll have a better angle to work with the green's slope rather than against it. Plan for a mid-iron to long-iron depending on your tee shot distance and wind conditions. Focus on landing your ball on the correct tier of the green, as the slope can quickly move balls away from dificult pin positions.

On the green

The small green's dramatic slope toward Lake Michigan is the defining feature for putting strategy. Approach putts from above the hole require extreme caution, as the ball can easily accelerate past the cup. When possible, leave yourself below the hole for uphill putts that are much more manageable. Pay close attention to pin positions - back pins are particularly treacherous given the green's pitch toward the water.

Watch for

  • 2 water hazards along the hole
  • Fairway bunker crossing the landing zone
  • Greenside bunker (greenside)
