The plan for No. 6

The play: A long par 4 that turns away from the sea. Par 4, men's stroke index 6 (74 468, 70 441, 66 430, 62 401, 54 327 yards). The hardest hole of the 2023 DP World Tour event.

Shot by shot

  1. Off the tee

The club: keep out of the fairway bunker on the left. Tour 2023: the hardest hole of the week; a missed fairway cost more than half a stroke. A mapped finish 230 yards from this tee leaves 235 to the center. No mapped hazard sits within 25 yards of that finish, so the landing area is open.

  2. Approach & recovery

Approach from the right half of the fairway but aim at the middle of the green: a big dune bunker guards its front right and hidden bunkers sit left (the club).

  3. On the green

The mapped green is about 40 yards deep and 40 yards wide.

  4. Watch for

    • Fairway bunker left
    • Dune bunker front right of the green
    • Hidden bunkers left of the green

Research notes

  • A large, receptive green that takes approaches best from the right; a big dune bunker guards the front right and hidden bunkers sit to the left. (Hole 6)[1]
  • The hardest hole in the 2023 tournament: missing the fairway cost tour players more than half a stroke, extra length off the tee was valuable, and the green was the second hardest to hit in regulation with the most putts per green hit. (Hole 6)[2]
  • The fairways are among the widest on tour but missing them is heavily punished, and the very large greens mean more long lag putts than usual when the wind blows. (Keys to performing well)[3]
