The plan for No. 1

The rightward bend makes a useful drive more valuable than the straightest line toward the green.

Off the tee

Choose a stopping zone before the cluster of sand on the right. Leave a view around the turn instead of trying to cut through its narrow side.

Approach & recovery

Approach the main green from the fairway side. The sand near the inside of the bend reduces the margin for a pushed second shot.

On the green

The green's shape gives more room through its central body than at its edges. Read the current surface on arrival; the older terrain survey predates the 2025 rebuild.

Watch for

  • Rightward bend
  • Inside sand
  • Narrow approach beside the trees

Research notes

  • No. 4 reopened August 7, 2025 after a full greens reconstruction. Pinehurst says laser scans were used to replicate the surfaces and Gil Hanse signed off on the contours. A 2024 terrain model predates this work; geometric equivalence still needs review. (Paragraphs beginning No. 4 reopened, It wasn’t just ripping, and The first step)[1]
  • The architect’s episode notes place the 2018 rebuild alongside No. 2 and describe designing within Pinehurst’s larger identity. (Architect-published episode highlights; not audio)[2]
