About Pinehurst Resort #4

Course Story

No. 4 began as a Donald Ross course in 1919 and has been reshaped through several eras. Hanse’s 2018 design emphasizes the property’s ridges, valleys and long views. The sixth green occupies a high point from which Hanse described seeing much of the course; the ninth illustrates his interest in trading a demanding route for a better approach angle. The greens reopened on August 7, 2025 after reconstruction, with their contours checked by Hanse. Our available 2024 terrain predates that work, so current contour maps are withheld while the aerials and scorecard remain available.

Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors

Master Gameplan

Let the width of the fairways help you choose an approach angle. Identify the next useful landing patch before advancing through the sandy corridors, and measure cross-bunker decisions from your actual position. Water changes the balance at the thirteenth and fourteenth. Use the current green in front of you to judge speed and break; the older terrain preview is not a verified representation of the rebuilt surface.

  • No. 4 reopened August 7, 2025 after a full greens reconstruction. Pinehurst says laser scans were used to replicate the surfaces and Gil Hanse signed off on the contours. A 2024 terrain model predates this work; geometric equivalence still needs review. (Paragraphs beginning No. 4 reopened, It wasn’t just ripping, and The first step)[1]
  • The architect’s episode notes place the 2018 rebuild alongside No. 2 and describe designing within Pinehurst’s larger identity. (Architect-published episode highlights; not audio)[2]
