The plan for No. 7
Hole 7 at Streamsong Red marks the beginning of the course's dramatic larger clockwise routing through the property's spectacular sand dunes. Designed by Masters Champions Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, this par-5 showcases their philosophy of letting the natural terrain dictate exceptional golf holes.
Off the tee
The tee shot strategy centers on finding the optimal position for your second shot while maximizing distance. With the fairway running straight and no significant hazards in play, most golfers can take an aggressive line with driver. Focus on the center-left portion of the fairway to open up the best angle for your approach. The target line should favor drawing the ball slightly to take advantage of any favorable bounces and rolls in the sandy Florida terrain. For club selection, driver is typically the play here unless wind conditions strongly suggest otherwise. The goal is to get as close to the green as possible while maintaining control, setting up either a genuine eagle opportunity or a comfortable birdie chance.
Approach & recovery
The approach shot is where this hole's true challenge reveals itself. With the green being notably small, precision trumps power on your second or third shot. If you're going for the green in two, aim for the center of the putting surface and accept whatever pin position is given - the small target leaves little room for error when attacking pins. For those laying up, position yourself about 100-120 yards from the green to ensure a full wedge approach. This distance allows for better spin control and accuracy when attacking the compact target. Avoid getting too close where you're left with an awkward half-swing that's difficult to control on such a small green.
On the green
The small green at the 7th demands conservative putting strategy. With limited real estate, most putts will be relatively straight, but the subtle breaks can be deceptive on Streamsong's sandy-based greens. Focus on getting your first putt close to the hole rather than being aggressive, as three-putts can quickly turn a scoring opportunity into a bogey. Pay attention to grain direction, which can be significant on Florida greens. Putts toward the water or in the direction of prevailing winds typically run faster, while putts against the grain may be slower than they appear.
