The plan for No. 3

The play: The first of eight holes on the coastline: a dogleg left that bends around the shore to a green tucked behind a dune. Par 4, men's stroke index 2 (74 442, 70 423, 66 400, 62 367, 54 342 yards).

Shot by shot

  1. Off the tee

Play out to the right: cutting the corner brings the sea and the bunkers inside the dogleg into play. On tour, even laying up right by the bunker averages about 4.3 (DP World Tour, 2025). A mapped finish 230 yards from this tee leaves 206 to the center. Left water 1 runs 205 to 255 yards from this tee.

  2. Approach & recovery

The club: a gap beside the right-hand dune takes a low running approach, but a bunker sits front right. Miss short and centre; the sea is further left.

  3. On the green

The mapped green is about 40 yards deep and 44 yards wide.

  4. Watch for

    • Sea along the left (inside of the dogleg)
    • Bunkers inside the dogleg
    • Bunker front right of the green

Research notes

  • A risk-and-reward tee shot: tour players who lay up to the right side of the fairway by the bunker average about 4.29, and hitting driver also plays over par; historically only about 10% birdies against 27% bogeys. (Hole 3)[1]
  • An opening framed by the dune on the right accepts a low running approach, but a bunker guards the front right. (Hole 3)[2]
  • The fairways are among the widest on tour but missing them is heavily punished, and the very large greens mean more long lag putts than usual when the wind blows. (Keys to performing well)[1]
