The plan for No. 10
The 10th hole at Sheep Ranch showcases the masterful design philosophy of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, who transformed this rugged coastal terrain into one of golf's most celebrated modern courses. Opening in 2020 as part of Bandon Dunes Resort's crown jewel collection, this hole embodies the natural, minimalist approach that has earned Sheep Ranch numerous accolades.
Off the tee
Your tee shot strategy should prioritize finding the fairway over maximum distance. With no significant hazards to navigate, the primary consideration is positioning yourself for the best approach angle to the small green. A driver isn't automatically the right play here - consider the wind conditions and your comfort level with longer clubs. In typical Oregon coast fashion, crosswinds can significantly affect ball flight, so aim for the center of the fairway and allow for wind drift. A well-struck fairway wood or hybrid that finds the short grass is infinitely better than a driver that finds the rough, especially given the premium on accuracy for the approach shot.
Approach & recovery
The approach shot is where this hole shows its teeth. The small green demands pinpoint accuracy, and with coastal winds swirling, club selection becomes crucial. Take at least one extra club to account for the wind, and don't be afraid to take two extra if conditions are particularly blustery. Aim for the center of the green regardless of pin position - the small target makes going flag-hunting a dangerous proposition. The middle of the green gives you the best chance for a two-putt par and keeps big numbers off the scorecard. Pay close attention to the wind direction and strength, as it can easily turn a well-struck shot into a missed green.
On the green
With a small putting surface, distance control is paramount. The green's compact size means most putts will be relatively short, but the coastal winds that affect approach shots can also influence longer putts. Read the grain carefully - coastal grasses often have pronounced grain that affects ball roll. Focus on getting your first putt close rather than trying to hole everything. The small green means even a mediocre approach shot shouldn't leave you with an impossibly long putt, so two-putting should be very achievable with proper pace control.
