The plan for No. 8

The 8th at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is a 361.0-yard par 4 that plays straightaway.

Off the tee

At 361 yards, most players will have a mid-iron or short-iron remaining regardless of driver or a more conservative club off the tee, which means the priority here is angle over distance. The smart play favors the left side of the fairway — carrying or working the tee shot toward the left-center opens up the entire green and takes the right-to-left slope out of play as a defensive factor. Favor a target line that starts down the left-center portion of the fairway, using a 3-wood or long-iron if you want to take bunkers out of play entirely while still leaving a comfortable approach club. Avoid bailing out too far right off the tee; while the fairway is wide enough to catch mishits, a tee shot that finishes right leaves a very difficult angle into any right-side hole location, with the green's slope working against you the entire way.

Approach & recovery

Club selection on the approach will range from a wedge to a short-iron depending on tee shot distance, but angle matters more than the number on your club. From the left side of the fairway, players can access every corner of the green; from the right side, the approach becomes a defensive shot no matter how pure the strike. Take dead aim at greenside sand bunkers guarding the putting surface — with multiple sand hazards ringing the green, missing long or to the wrong side brings a difficult up-and-down into play. Favor approaches that land short and allow the ball to feed with the right-to-left contour rather than fighting against it.

On the green

The green's defining characteristic is its pronounced right-to-left tilt. Putts and chips from above the hole moving right to left will run out much faster than they appear, while shots played from the correct angle can use this slope to feed toward far hole locations. Right-side pin positions are particularly demanding — players who found the right side of the fairway will battle both the approach angle and then a green that pulls everything away from a right pin. Read every putt with this dominant break in mind, and favor conservative lag putting when above the hole.

Watch for

  • Fairway bunker crossing the landing zone
  • Greenside bunker (greenside)
