The plan for No. 13
A par 4 and stroke index 4. Crump found this hole midway through construction (Planet Golf), and it is described as the most demanding par 4 on the course (Top 100): first to a perched landing area on the right, then a long second sweeping left, with death or glory at hand (Golf Digest).
Off the tee
The tee is tucked into the trees with only a sliver of view; the fairway bottlenecks and turns left. The bold line challenges the left bunkers, and a large landing area waits right (GolfCourseGurus).
Approach & recovery
Three ways in: play safely right, go directly over the scrub, or work the ball in from the apron short right and let the slope kick it left (Golf Club Atlas; Top 100).
On the green
The green sits high above the big trap along the left (1962 broadcast) and is sloped against the incoming shot (Top 100). The surface runs 39 yards from front to back; read the contour panel for slope.
Watch for
- Seven bunkers left
- Eight bunkers right

Research notes
- 1962 broadcast: the 13th green swings out from the fairway almost at a right angle and sits high above the big trap along the left; both players drove down the left centre. (00:33:01)[1]
- Crump found the 13th midway through construction. The fairway turns left around a scrubby ravine: go directly over it or play out right and chip and putt for par. (review)[2]
- On the 13th the natural contours let a player work the ball in from the apron short right, where the slope kicks it left toward the green. (reader review)[3]
- The 13th approach offers three options: play safely right, go directly over the scrub, or hook it out right of the green and let it run 30 to 40 yards. (Holes to Note: 13th)[4]
- The 13th goes first to a perched landing area on the right, then a long second sweeping left, with death or glory at hand. — Jerry Tarde (narration) (00:09:52)[5]
- The 13th is described as the most demanding par 4 on the course, with the green sloped against the incoming shot.[3]
- The 13th tee is tucked into the trees with only a sliver of view up the fairway, which bottlenecks and turns left; the direct line challenges the left bunkers, with a large landing area right for the less bold. (Best Par 4)[6]
- A 12-handicap guest: every drive has a forced carry and the landing area is rarely visible, but a roughly 230-yard driver carried them all from the men's tees and found generous fairways beyond. (playing the course)[7]
- About half the approaches need a carry, and anything short is punished; laying up on the par 4s and going in with a wedge is no disgrace. (playing the course)[7]
- Eight of the 10 short-course holes replicate approach shots on the main course (2, 3, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18), with the same elevation change and direction. (short course)[7]
- Greens can reach 12 to 13 on the Stimpmeter at tournament time, and the aim of a putt may be 90 degrees from the straight line to the hole. — Jerry Tarde (narration) (00:06:41)[5]
- On the 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 16th and 17th the player is unlikely to see the drive land. (Holes to Note: 9th)[4]
- Recent Tom Fazio work has removed trees, exposed more sand and moved tees back; hard holes got harder. — Jerry Tarde (narration) (00:07:31)[5]
- The landing areas off the tee are more generous than the reputation suggests; about half the greens need an all-carry approach and the rest accept a ball bounced in from the front. (review)[2]
- Crump died suddenly in early 1918 with only fourteen holes open; the 12th through 15th were built the following year by Hugh Wilson and William Flynn to his plans. (review)[2]
- Crump insisted on keeping each hole isolated and on a routing that regularly changes direction. (review)[2]
- Harry Colt had a large input into the final routing; Crump consulted many leading architects but held strong views on how the course should be arranged. (review)[2]
- Hotelier George Crump bought the land in 1912 and spent the next six years living at Pine Valley, searching out the holes. (review)[2]
- Pine Valley has held the No. 1 spot in GOLF's world ranking for decades, with a routing that hopscotches between islands of turf across sandy ground. (3 things to know)[8]
- The par 3s ask for roughly a three wood, 4 iron, 9 iron and 6 iron into the 3rd, 5th, 10th and 14th for a good player. (Holes to Note: 10th)[4]
