About La Costa Resort & Spa (North course)
The North Course is the championship course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The current card uses Roman numerals I through VI, ranging from 7,500 to 4,502 yards. This is a meaningful choice of playing experience: the twelfth alone ranges from a 282-yard par 3 to 85 yards.
Hanse’s redesign reshaped the greens, bunkering and native areas for the course’s new NCAA Championship role. The long seventh and fourteenth are par 4s on the current card, while the short fifteenth asks whether a drive leaves a useful approach past its central bunker. The sixteenth crosses water to a shallow target, and the final two holes restore length and positional demands.
Course Strategy & Gameplan
Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors
Choose a tee set by the long par 3s and the approaches you expect on the long par 4s, not simply by the total yardage. The USGA inventory also lists an I/II combination; its individual hole routing needs the operator’s combination card before it can be represented accurately here.
Approach Angles & Green Complex Defense
On the par 5s, compare the next landing area with the fairway bunkers and water before committing to a long second. On shorter holes such as 11 and 15, plan the approach’s stopping distance before deciding how far to drive. John Fields’ discussion of the redesign is especially helpful for the raised fifteenth green and the water-and-bunker target on 16. Cameron Young’s round with No Laying Up offers ground-level context for the renovated course; his club selections describe his game and the filmed setup, not a prescription for yours.
Pro Tips & Course Advice
Check the current markers: the scorecard’s I–VI yardages and the neutral map reference are different things.
Consider the long par 3 at 12 and long par 4s at 7 and 14 when choosing a tee set.
Plan a conservative stopping distance into 11 and 15, where water sits beyond the green.
At 16, carry the front trouble with margin while allowing for the bunkers behind.
Use green contours to understand broad surface shape, then assess today’s firmness, speed and flag position on site.
Seasonal Playing Conditions
Wind, rough and firmness change the best landing targets. The contour maps describe terrain collected after the renovation; they do not establish current green speed or a precise putting line.
