About The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island
Perched dramatically along the windswept shores of the Atlantic Ocean, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island stands as Pete and Alice Dye's crowning achievement—a masterful blend of strategic design and raw natural beauty that has captivated golfers and challenged the world's best players since its inception. What began as a course planned to sit modestly behind the dunes was transformed by Alice Dye's visionary suggestion to elevate the entire layout, creating the rare phenomenon of ocean views from every single hole while simultaneously exposing players to the Atlantic's relentless and unpredictable coastal winds.
This elevated positioning creates a playing experience unlike virtually any other course outside the British Isles, where wind becomes not just a factor but the defining element of strategy. The constant maritime breezes can transform club selection by three or four clubs in either direction, making course management and shot execution as much about reading conditions as understanding yardages. Players must embrace the wind rather than fight it, using the firm, fast-running conditions their advantage while respecting the punishment that awaits those who miscalculate.
Course Strategy & Gameplan
Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors
Treat wind as the primary hazard: nine holes play into the Atlantic breeze and nine return, so club selection and start lines change hole to hole. Favor center fairways and conservative lines to wide greens rather than chasing pins beside waste areas and run-off slopes.
