About Medinah Country Club (Course 3)
Course No. 3 has hosted three U.S. Opens (1949, 1975, 1990), two PGA Championships (1999, 2006), the 2012 Ryder Cup and the 2019 BMW Championship. In December 2021 the club backed a $23.5 million master plan by OCM (Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking and Ashley Mead). The course closed in October 2022, construction began in April 2023 and shaping and grassing were finished by mid-October 2023; Cocking called it part restoration, part renovation and part redesign.
The PGA TOUR reports that fairway area doubled from 29 to 58 acres, the bunker count rose from 70 to 117 and the average green grew from about 6,000 to 8,600 square feet. Around Lake Kadijah the old par-3 17th became a Cape-style par-4 16th played diagonally across an arm of the lake, and a new par-3 17th plays back across the water. Older hole diagrams and yardage books describe a different routing, so these maps were traced fresh from 2025 imagery rather than carried over.
Course Strategy & Gameplan
Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors
Wider fairways move the decision from simply finding short grass to choosing the side that opens the green. For the Cup the fairways are framed by a narrow collar of intermediate rough with longer rough beyond, so a drive that drifts just off the short grass is still playable while a bigger miss is not.
Approach Angles & Green Complex Defense
On the members' 5th to 7th a split-rail boundary fence runs the length of each hole a few feet left of the intermediate cut, so the left edge is the one to respect. The 10th is the longest hole and asks for a drive through an unbunkered chute between two oaks.
Scoring Windows & Critical Swing Holes
The Lake Kadijah stretch changes the questions. The 16th lets you choose how much of the lake to cut off from the tee, and water runs down its right side; the 17th crosses an arm of the lake to a green set right to left; the 18th drives back over the water. Decide on the line you can repeat, not the one that only works on your best swing.
Pro Tips & Course Advice
Tournament coverage uses Presidents Cup numbering: add 4 to a member hole number (member 16 is Cup 12).
The card shown is the Cup-week setup (7,548 yards, par 70); member tees and par differ.
Green contours are not shown: the newest public elevation survey (2022) predates OCM's rebuilt greens.
The 16th can be set up well short of its 402-yard maximum, which brings the water on the right into play.

- Golf Course Architecture reported the membership approved OCM's $23.5 million master plan in December 2021, with construction set for 2023 and reopening in 2024. (lead)[2]
- Klein writes that fairways now have a 5-foot collar of 1.5-inch intermediate rough, with 4-inch rough beyond, a change suggested by U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker. ('Golf course provides big playing field')[3]
Mike Cocking told Golf Course Architecture the project is best described as part restoration, part renovation and part redesign.
(Cocking quote)[1]- PGA TOUR lists No. 3's events: the Western Open (1939, 1962, 1966), U.S. Opens (1949, 1975, 1990), 1988 U.S. Senior Open, PGA Championships (1999, 2006), 2012 Ryder Cup and 2019 BMW Championship. ('Storied Medinah' section)[3]
- PGA TOUR reports Presidents Cup matches start on members' No. 5, and matches that go the distance finish on members' Nos. 1-4. The stated reasons: about 80% of matches end by the 16th, so the lake holes arrive at the climax, and the start sits nearer spectator entry. ('Set-up sees sequence changes')[3]
- PGA TOUR's Bradley Klein reports that fairway area doubled from 29 to 58 acres, bunkers rose from 70 to 117, and average green size grew more than 40%, from 6,000 to 8,600 square feet. ('A whole new ballpark' / 'Golf course provides big playing field')[3]
