The plan for No. 18
The 18th hole at Spyglass Hill provides a fitting finale to one of the Monterey Peninsula's most challenging courses, having tested professionals in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am since 1967. This closing hole embodies the strategic design philosophy that made Robert Louis Stevenson's literary inspiration a modern classic.
Off the tee
The tee shot strategy is refreshingly straightforward compared to many of Spyglass Hill's more intimidating holes. A single fairway bunker guards the landing area, but it's easily avoided with proper target line selection. Driver isn't necessary here - a 3-wood or long iron can position you perfectly for the approach while keeping the ball in the short grass. Focus on the center of the fairway rather than trying to gain every possible yard, as accuracy is paramount for setting up your approach angle to the small green.
Approach & recovery
The approach shot is where this hole reveals its teeth. The small green demands precision with your mid to short iron, and elevation changes can make club selection tricky. The key insight from course knowledge is crucial here: keep your second shot below the hole at all costs. The green's contours make uphill putts far more manageable than downhill attempts. Aim for the front portion of the green when possible, allowing the natural slope to feed your ball toward most pin positions. Missing long or above the hole can leave you with one of the most challenging putts on the course.
On the green
The putting surface, while small, features subtle breaks that can catch unwary golfers off-guard. The green's compact size means precision is required even on shorter putts. Pay particular attention to the slope from back to front - balls above the hole can quickly accelerate past the cup. When reading putts, remember that the coastal location can affect green speeds throughout the day as moisture conditions change. Conservative lag putting is often the wisest approach, especially on your first visit to this green.
