About Riviera Country Club, The

Course Story

The character of Riviera is easiest to understand through its contrasts. The opening par 5 offers possibilities, while the second demands patience. No. 6 divides its putting surface with a bunker; No. 8 offers two fairway routes; No. 10 makes a short hole a demanding positional problem. Those features explain why a useful Riviera plan needs more than a yardage and a default club.

The four par 3s deserve their own study. No. 4 allows a bank-assisted approach, No. 6 makes the chosen section of green crucial, No. 14 requires you to look past imposing bunkers, and No. 16 compresses the target. Review each from tee to green, then work backward from the landing area you can realistically hit.

Course Strategy & Gameplan

Tactical DNA & Fairway Corridors

Master Gameplan

Build the round around landing windows and approach angles. Before each tee shot, identify where your normal shot finishes, how much room surrounds that landing point, and whether the next shot remains open after your common miss. Choose a club only after answering those questions.

📐

Approach Angles & Green Complex Defense

Approach Strategy

On the short tenth, decide where the second shot should begin before deciding whether to attack the green. On the split eighth, commit to one fairway rather than aiming between them. On longer holes, an approach from grass you can strike cleanly can be more valuable than a shorter shot from a poor lie. The 19th Hole Golf Show's 2018 Riviera account describes how unfamiliar kikuyu lies and automatic driver choices cost strokes; treat that as a reason to inspect the lie, not as a prescription to copy the speaker's club selections.

Pro Tips & Course Advice

5 Caddie Tips
1

Check the day's markers and card. Tournament yardages describe a particular setup and can differ substantially from the tees in use.

2

At No. 6, choose a section of green that leaves a putt around the central bunker; the geometric center is not a useful default target.

3

At No. 8, compare the landing width and next-shot angle of both fairways before choosing one.

4

Judge recovery shots from the actual lie. A ball sitting up in thick grass does not guarantee a clean, predictable strike.

5

Use the hole maps for position and the ground-level view for depth. Flyovers cannot establish precise green contours or today's speed.

  • George C. Thomas designed the course, which opened in 1927. (Opening course-history paragraph)[1]
  • Riviera pairs an inviting opening par 5 with a demanding second and distinctive par 3s at 4, 6, 14 and 16. (Starting holes / Par-3 holes)[2]
  • The 2018 firsthand account links lost strokes to automatic driver selection and unfamiliar kikuyu lies; it supports checking landing positions and the actual lie rather than copying club choices. (0:16:55–0:18:23)[3]
