The event traces to the Swiss Open, first played in 1923, and has been staged almost entirely at Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre in the Alpine resort of Crans-Montana since 1939, becoming a fixture of the European (now DP World) Tour. Seve Ballesteros holds the record for most victories with three (1977, 1978, 1989), and the tournament's high-altitude setting has long produced very low scoring; Thriston Lawrence set the aggregate record of 258 (22 under par) when he won in 2025. Omega has been the title sponsor for the modern "Omega European Masters" era, and the roll of champions includes major winners and Ryder Cup figures such as Nick Faldo, José María Olazábal, Colin Montgomerie, Sergio García and Danny Willett.
